{"id":5854,"date":"2026-07-20T07:49:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T07:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/20\/mike-cox-ends-his-campaign-for-michigan-governor\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T07:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T07:49:08","slug":"mike-cox-ends-his-campaign-for-michigan-governor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/20\/mike-cox-ends-his-campaign-for-michigan-governor\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Cox ends his campaign for Michigan governor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox <a href=\"https:\/\/mikecox2026.com\">announced<\/a> in a statement that he is suspending his gubernatorial campaign Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mike_Cox\/status\/2078227110842495392?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\">post<\/a> to X Friday afternoon, Cox stated his departure from the race and reflected on his decades of public service, writing that serving Michiganders has been the most meaningful part of his career.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday I leave the race for Governor with great sadness because I never found a better experience than serving the people of Michigan as I did for 21 years as a prosecutor and Attorney General (and before that, as a Marine),\u201d Cox wrote. \u201cWhile I achieved much greater material rewards outside of public service, those material rewards can never equal the joy and sense of purpose I felt serving the working men and women of Michigan in public office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cox is the second Republican candidate to drop out of the race following President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/president-donald-trump-endorses-john-james-in-gubernatorial-race-nesbitt-suspends-campaign\/\">endorsement<\/a> of U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/johnjamesmi.com\">John James<\/a>, R-Mich., in April. Senate Minority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senatoraricnesbitt.com\">Aric Nesbitt<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2026\/06\/22\/aric-nesbitt-suspends-campaign-for-michigan-governor-following-trumps-nod-for-john-james\/\">suspended<\/a> his campaign immediately following Trump\u2019s endorsement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cox wrote Trump\u2019s endorsement played a key role in his decision, stating his support for James and other Republican candidates on the ballot in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs President Trump has endorsed John James and ordained his primary victory, I will do whatever I can to help John James, Tony Forlini, and Doug Lloyd win in November,\u201d Cox wrote.\u00a0 \u201cWe need them and the whole Republican team to win and roll back the last 8 years of despair, distress, and decline and return Michigan to greatness. The stakes are simply too high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cox\u2019s departure creates a close race for the Republican nomination between James and businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perryjohnson.com\">Perry Johnson<\/a>. In an Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Da6Pm0pJQ-s\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\">post<\/a>, James thanked Cox for his support and called for party unity ahead of the Aug. 4 primary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you to Mike Cox for helping to give me my start in 2017,\u201d James wrote. \u201cIt makes your endorsement today mean so much more. This is exactly the kind of unity we need to win in November. President Trump has endorsed me, and other former primary opponents Tom Leonard and Aric Nesbitt have united behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PJQualityGuru\/status\/2078230902929272948\">post<\/a> on X, Johnson praised Cox\u2019s efforts and encouraged his supporters who opposed James to join his campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMike Cox ran a great race doing a very effective job demonstrating why John James should never be the governor of Michigan and would be defeated by Jocelyn Benson,\u201d Johnson wrote. \u201cI am sad to see Mike leave the race, but this is a fantastic opportunity to unite voters who do not want to see John James as our nominee!
