Community members gathered outside the Women\u2019s Huron Valley Correctional Facility<\/a> Wednesday evening for a vigil honoring the women who have died<\/a> at the facility, hosted by the bereaved families. Those in attendance advocated for the facility to be shut down as a result of four recent deaths sparking demands<\/a> for change. These deaths are the most recent tragedy to occur in relation to\u00a0 systemic concerns at WHV \u2014 referencing the death of Jennifer Wallace, who died from sepsis at the facility in November, suspected as a result of medical neglect<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n A memorial table featured photos of Rebecca Fackler, Khaira Howard, Ashley Hoath, Delphena Jones and Jennifer Wallace. Attending relatives \u2014 joined by community advocates \u2014\u00a0 shared anecdotes of their loved ones, while calling for improved protections for women who are currently incarcerated at WHV. The vigil follows a series of ongoing<\/a> protests against the Michigan Department of Corrections<\/a>. Advocates within the community, including former WHV inmates, gather weekly across the street from any one of the facility\u2019s outdoor recreation spaces, allowing some of the currently incarcerated women to hear statements from family and advocates.\u00a0<\/p>\n
