{"id":5898,"date":"2026-07-25T01:49:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T01:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/25\/michigan-should-look-to-geoexchange\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T01:49:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T01:49:09","slug":"michigan-should-look-to-geoexchange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/25\/michigan-should-look-to-geoexchange\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan should look to geoexchange"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fossil fuels are the largest<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/causes-effects-climate-change\"> contributor<\/a> to global climate change. The increasing use of coal, oil and gas results in greater greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions, which trap heat in the atmosphere and ultimately warm the planet. These fossil fuels are extensively used to supply a current<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=65264\"> high<\/a> energy demand, in the U.S. and the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-review-2025\/global-trends\">world<\/a>. This demand stems<a href=\"https:\/\/clcouncil.org\/blog\/shouldering-the-load\/\"> from<\/a> several sources, notably including the development of data centers, overall manufacturing and the electrification of transportation and buildings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Universities are a <a href=\"https:\/\/wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/wcc.904\">huge<\/a> part of this energy demand and therefore are significant contributors to the energy crisis. They relentlessly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/usa-pollution-universities\/\">use<\/a> fossil fuels to power their campuses. But universities are starting to recognize their negative effects on the environment and turn toward renewable energy sources as an alternative to fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of one type of renewable resource in particular, geothermal, is growing. Geoexchange technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geothermalcanada.org\/geoexchange-vs-geothermal\">powered<\/a> by geothermal energy, is a looped pipe system that draws from natural heat underground to generate power, electricity, heating and cooling. Colleges are <a href=\"https:\/\/missiongeo.org\/news\/higher-education-makes-the-grade-in-adopting-geothermal-heating-and-cooling\">beginning<\/a> to implement geothermal\u00a0 technology on a wider scale because of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666188825008081\">positive<\/a> impact on the environment. Geoexchange<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/geothermal\/geothermal-energy-and-the-environment.php\"> produces<\/a> 99% less carbon dioxide and 97% less sulfur compounds than fossil fuel plants.\u00a0 The renewable source\u2019s efficiency and economic viability will allow campuses like the University of Michigan\u2019s to get closer to<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/universities-swapping-energy-sources-geothermal-now-growing-trend\/story?id=107638932\"> reaching<\/a> their sustainability goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University is already utilizing geoexchange technology on North Campus with their<a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/u-m-pushes-geoexchange-innovation-deeper-in-pursuit-of-carbon-neutrality\/\"> Hayward Street system<\/a>. The new<a href=\"https:\/\/recreation.umich.edu\/facility\/hadley-family-recreation-well-being-center\/\"> Hadley Family Recreation &amp; Well-Being Center<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/u-m-advances-campus-energy-transition-operations-progress-in-fy-25\/\">Edward and Rosalie Ginsberg Building<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/umaec.umich.edu\/projects\/major-projects\/new-central-campus-residential-development\/\">Wolverine Village<\/a> will also be geoexchange sites \u2014 an aspect of their construction that\u2019s not largely advertised. The newly empty Palmer Field is in<a href=\"https:\/\/campusplan2050.umich.edu\/plans-and-maps\/central-campus\/palmer-drive\/\"> consideration<\/a> for geoexchange as well. For a college trying to commit to a sustainable future, this is a good start.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current projects are a start to implementing geothermal energy at the University but in the grand scheme, these geoexchange projects are few in number. The University should be taking advantage of a greater opportunity to implement it across campus. By focusing on geothermal, the University would make a sustainable and clean commitment and pave its way to emerge as a national face for a leading renewable energy source. And for a campus that has specific goals for<a href=\"https:\/\/planetblue.umich.edu\/campus\/goals-and-dashboards\/goals\/\"> carbon neutrality<\/a>, it is a necessary move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These goals, outlined in the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/campusplan2050.umich.edu\/\">Campus Plan 2050<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/campusplan2050.umich.edu\/plans-and-maps\/physical-systems\/climate-action\/\"> include<\/a> eliminating purchased power to net zero by 2025 \u2014 which was not achieved in that timeframe. Right now, the University relies on its<a href=\"https:\/\/utilities.fo.umich.edu\/teams\/central-power-plant\/\"> Central Power Plant<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/how-does-the-university-generate-power\/\"> purchasing<\/a> energy from outside companies to generate power. However, expanding geothermal energy on campus could reduce these reliances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to its decreased emissions, geothermal energy is more durable than traditional heating and cooling systems. On average, a heating, ventilation and air conditioning<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheem.com\/air-conditioning\/articles\/hvac-101-understanding-the-basics\/\"> system<\/a>, which is what most University buildings currently use,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bryant.com\/en\/us\/products\/how-long-do-hvac-systems-last\/\"> lasts<\/a> between 10 to 25 years. Meanwhile, geothermal systems can<a href=\"https:\/\/dandelionenergy.com\/geothermal-advantages-disadvantages\"> last<\/a> more than 50 years, with heat pump replacement possible after 20 to 25 years. It also provides <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/u-m-pushes-geoexchange-innovation-deeper-in-pursuit-of-carbon-neutrality\/\">more<\/a> heating and cooling per energy input than these conventional systems and uses less water, proving its efficiency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when compared to other forms of clean energy, geothermal has significant advantages. Since these systems primarily<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/hgeo\/geothermal\/geothermal-basics\"> operate<\/a> with underground pumps, they use less land whereas alternatives like solar or wind energy require<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkgeoenergy.com\/geothermal-energy-is-least-land-use-intense-source-of-the-renewable-energy-technologies\/\"> more<\/a> space. In Ann Arbor and on the University\u2019s campus, space is precious. A clean energy system that uses less of it is preferable for infrastructure and makes a convincing case for University decision makers. Furthermore, geothermal energy has greater baseload capacity and is a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoflow.com\/us\/blog\/solar-energy-vs-geothermal-energy\"> stable<\/a> provider, as it is not dependent on weather, time or season as wind and solar energy are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/hgeo\/geothermal\/geothermal-district-heating-cooling\">Several<\/a> college campuses across the country have full or partial geothermal energy systems. Ball State University boasts the largest<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/about\/geothermal\"> system<\/a>, with more than 3,600 boreholes dug into the ground \u2014 fueling 50 campus buildings. At Colorado Mesa University, geothermal provides 90% of the energy required to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradomesa.edu\/sustainability\/initiatives\/geo-grid.html#:~:text=The%20system%20has%20saved%20CMU:%20*%2017%2C742,energy%20integrations%20*%20Incorporating%20solar%20voltaic%20energy\"> operate the campus<\/a>. The University of Notre Dame is also investing in geothermal by<a href=\"https:\/\/stories.nd.edu\/stories\/going-geothermal\/\"> building<\/a> systems underneath new athletic facilities, something the University has begun but should devote even more attention to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powering a college campus with geothermal energy isn\u2019t just a small environmental project that gains public appreciation points, it\u2019s a realistic sustainability goal that the University needs to commit itself to entirely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geothermal energy is not just becoming prominent for colleges, though. This past February, the U.S.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/\"> Department of Energy<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-announces-1715-million-expand-us-geothermal-energy\"> announced<\/a> it is investing $171.5 million to expand geothermal energy in the country. Although this is a relatively small investment, it\u2019s clear the current energy demand is forcing reconsideration of where power comes from \u2014 and geothermal energy is beginning to join the conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resistance to implementing greater geothermal energy stems<a href=\"https:\/\/isee.illinois.edu\/the-future-of-geothermal-energy-is-bright\/\"> from<\/a> high upfront costs and feasibility concerns. Also, on a campus and city already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/ann-arbor-construction-wolverine-village-and-south-u-high-rises\/\">riddled<\/a> with construction projects, social acceptance of a massive geothermal switch would drop dramatically. These projects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalbioenergy.org\/geothermal-energy-pros-and-cons\/\">require<\/a> a lot of money, time and disruption to campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, as most U-M students know, the University will always continue expanding and that does require <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/ann-arbor-construction-wolverine-village-and-south-u-high-rises\/\">construction<\/a>. And in any upcoming U-M construction projects, geothermal should be a consideration. In terms of cost, geothermal energy\u2019s high upfront costs can be offset over time because of its high<a href=\"https:\/\/evolvedthermal.com\/geothermal-heating-and-cooling-is-it-worth-the-investment-2\/\"> efficiency<\/a>, long-term operational savings and government incentives. Yes, it\u2019s an investment, but there will still be a beneficial return for the University. And the reality is, the University will always need power. The decision just lies in where it\u2019s going to come from.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geothermal energy should be a University priority. And the move to geothermal starts with the administration making a dedication that all new projects, like dorms, athletic facilities or academic buildings, will run primarily on this type of energy. Geothermal energy should also be implemented at preexisting spaces, further reducing the reliance on the Central Power Plant and outside companies. Other colleges haven\u2019t let their old systems stop them from restructuring new sustainable methods, so there\u2019s no reason the University can\u2019t either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University must actively seek to reinvent campus in sustainable ways. Right now there is an opportunity to shift energy supply from fossil fuels to renewable resources, and with geoexchange technology the University can become a prominent sustainability model. There\u2019s no doubt that this University will continue to expand, it\u2019s just about ensuring that the expansions are powered by cleaner energy sources, like geothermal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Emma Margaron is a Summer Senior Opinion Editor who writes about the environment, science and justice.
