{"id":5948,"date":"2026-07-29T19:49:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T19:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/29\/csg-discusses-member-conduct-considers-constitutional-amendment-allowing-member-removal-csg-discusses-member-conduct-and-possible-amendment\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T19:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T19:49:08","slug":"csg-discusses-member-conduct-considers-constitutional-amendment-allowing-member-removal-csg-discusses-member-conduct-and-possible-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/29\/csg-discusses-member-conduct-considers-constitutional-amendment-allowing-member-removal-csg-discusses-member-conduct-and-possible-amendment\/","title":{"rendered":"CSG discusses member conduct, considers constitutional amendment allowing member removal CSG discusses member conduct and possible amendment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csg.umich.edu\/\">Central Student Government<\/a> held a special meeting over Zoom Monday evening to discuss member conduct and introduce an amendment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1cAmDGeUstvsL7oisrh3joCwO-4rjFZqd4oO6FnAWmY0\/edit?tab=t.0\">CSG constitution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed amendment, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1_nkYWUh6_G8d-bG4dSrCZI3gLo9PDtN97mV8SM7Y5qY\/edit?tab=t.0\">CA 16-005<\/a>, was the primary focus of the meeting. CA 16-005 would create a formal procedure for removing a current member of the CSG body via a two-thirds majority vote; without the amendment, removals would continue to be handled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csg.umich.edu\/judicial\">Central Student Judiciary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting began with community concerns. Rackham student Tyler Fioritto, CSG representative, claimed negative attention following an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/student-government\/csg-representatives-walk-out-of-assembly-meeting-in-response-to-failed-impeachment\/\">unsuccessful attempt<\/a> to impeach him in February has affected his personal life. Fioritto said he feels the Assembly has displayed hypocrisy in its proceedings post-impeachment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve had people literally come to my house and bang on my door \u2026 I\u2019ve also had threats made against my life,\u201d Fioritto said. \u201cIf it was really a democratic process here, there would be 45 empty seats, and I think that is the truest indictment of CSG. Regardless, I don\u2019t care at this point, because I realized I\u2019m not going to get through to you people. Some of you people are awful humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fioritto also raised concerns about the legitimacy of the CSG body \u2014 citing a failed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/student-government\/csg-discusses-recording-policies-and-representative-safety\/\">proposed recording ban<\/a> \u2014 and said he believes the Assembly is failing in its duty to represent the students, and restricting student rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the end of the day, this is a failed institution,\u201d Fioritto said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t believe that, look at the turnout, or ask people their opinion of CSG. I guarantee you, you will get one of three responses: One: \u2018what is CSG?\u2019 Two: \u2018I hate CSG.\u2019 Or three: \u2018I mean, I like the library thing, but other than that, I don\u2019t know much about CSG.\u2019 If that is the barometer we are working off of, then we have some problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Fioritto\u2019s comments, an anonymous statement sent to the Assembly was\u00a0 read aloud by LSA rising sophomore James Rosenthal, CSG secretary. The anonymous community member claimed that CA 16-004 is a second impeachment attempt of Fioritto, and defended the amendment as functionally identical to a traditional recall \u2014 per the CSG constitution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe only difference is the margin necessary for recall against the margin necessary for impeachment\u2026rendered irrelevant by the fact that it is clear by the near-unanimous vote of the Assembly which led to Fioritto\u2019s actual impeachment case that the Assembly as a whole, with respect to both vote margins does not wish Fioritto among their ranks any longer,\u201d the statement read. \u201cI would advise that the recall vote be passed, and that the duty be handed over to the Court that you trust to handle these cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, LSA rising senior Aidan Burke, CSG student general counsel, clarified that all constitutional amendments supersede the judgement of the CSJ. If passed, the amendment would appear on the 2026 Fall CSG election ballot to be voted on by the student body. If approved, the amendment will then be enacted by the Assembly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A motion was then introduced to move CA 16-005 into the business section of the meeting, allowing it to be considered by student representatives. The motion passed, with one objection raised by Fioritto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the introductions section of the meeting, resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1sAkDrgSVjYqVoMvbMFSM7vuYTHEAr0eeVY8x6xFL6dM\/edit?tab=t.0\">AR 16-032<\/a>, Supplemental Accountability Measures, was introduced, which would allow for CA 16-005 to be added to the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1wxm36FmKVLfFS3WZuDUFcZzD77vI41q6WSHnfnjF2t8\/edit?tab=t.0\">CSG compiled code<\/a>, should the constitutional amendment pass a vote by the student body. AR 16-032 was referred to the Rules Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the Assembly moved on to the business portion of the meeting for discussion and voting on CA 16-005. Fioritto proposed the amendment be referred to both the Rules and Communications Committees, and requested a roll call vote. After the vote, quorum had not been met and a motion to adjourn \u2014 after which any standing bills would be automatically re-referred to the Rules Committee\u2014 was made.
