Midterm elections<\/a> in the United States are fast approaching, and the Democratic Party is still recalibrating following former Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 loss in the 2024 presidential election<\/a>. While two years remain until the next election for the presidency, there are many races \u2014 local, statewide and congressional \u2014 between now and 2028 that could grant Democrats inroads against the policies of President Donald Trump\u2019s second administration, as well as the ability to establish lasting influence beyond Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n Congressional primary elections have yet to take place in many states, including Michigan<\/a>, so the\u00a0 candidates the Democratic Party will run in the general elections are not yet determined. In the meantime, the party has conflicting ideas<\/a> as to what types of candidates they should invest in.<\/p>\n Of course, the image of an ideal candidate will fluctuate across election cycles, and it won\u2019t be the same in every district and state. Generally though, while the Trump administration holds office, it is the most advantageous time for Democrats to invest in progressive candidates \u2014 especially in local and state-level races. At this moment, progressive candidates are better equipped<\/a> to reliably mobilize a coalition than more cautious, moderate candidates.<\/p>\n Record-low approval<\/a> of the Trump administration provides an opportunity<\/a> for Democrats. Political sentiments swing like pendulums<\/a>, most often in opposition to the party of power. President Trump\u2019s approval among demographics key to his 2024 success has dwindled (notably among Hispanic<\/a> voters and even registered Republican<\/a> voters, due in large part to mass deportations<\/a> and affordability<\/a>, respectively). Additionally, key issues Trump campaigned<\/a> on \u2014 notably the costs of gas and groceries \u2014 have not improved<\/a> and, in some instances, have worsened<\/a>. With conditions and approval ratings becoming more favorable toward progressives, it is time for Democrats to promote these candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n
