Coming off of various injuries, senior defensive end John Henry Daley, graduate linebacker Nathaniel Staehling, senior cornerback Smith Snowden and graduate safety Rod Moore were all recouping when Wolverines coach Kyle Whittingham took over the program.

Now well into preseason training, these four names have come up time and time again due to their expected impact on the Michigan defense. Through almost two weeks of practice, this group has not only begun to return to their athletic form, but they’ve also absorbed a new defensive scheme and integrated themselves into their respective units.

“A lot of those injury guys that you hope are back, those guys look pretty good right now,” Wolverines defensive coordinator Jay Hill said Thursday. “So we’re going to have those guys back. That’s probably been the most encouraging.”

Daley and Moore are both recovering from extensive injuries which kept them sidelined for prolonged periods. After suffering a ruptured achilles in late November, Daley has undergone a comprehensive recovery. While he’s well-ahead of standard Achilles injury recovery timelines, there is still caution surrounding his return to the gridiron. Achilles injuries are notoriously fickle and questions remain as to how Daley’s athleticism will respond after such a severe injury.

In Michigan’s locker room, though, there is only confidence and positivity surrounding Daley’s return. Given the medical all-clear ahead of fall training camp, Daley alongside Whittingham have reported that he’s 100% healthy and ready to go. If this is truly the case, the Wolverines are gaining a much-needed threat on the defensive line. And if Daley can truly return to his pre-injury form, his aggressive athleticism will be happily welcomed by his team.

Michigan fans are likely familiar with the ins and outs of Moore’s left knee injury that has plagued the sixth-year safety for the last two seasons. Since March 27 2024, Moore has endured three surgeries and a multitude of setbacks that have kept him on the bench. Over two years later and Moore has just completed four full practices in a row for the first time in a long while. Now he’s itching to return to the field and make a tangible impact for the Wolverines.

“The first week I started off going practice, and then practice and I take an off day, then I practice, practice, practice, off day, and then now I’m able to stack days without coming back the next day feeling super sore,” Moore said Tuesday. “So it was really just a building block, stacking days. They had me on a pitch count like you said, that’s going out the window, so yeah, I feel pretty good.”

Staehling and Snowden are coming off of relatively smaller injuries than those of Moore and Daley. Staehling had a shoulder issue that kept him out of the Spring Game, but not entirely removed from spring practice. Staehling is fighting for a spot in the linebacker rotation and has reportedly displayed a high football IQ and quick ability to pick up the defensive scheme that have made him a threat on the field.

Similarly, Snowden did not play in the Spring Game but was available for some April practices with Michigan. Snowden had a core muscle injury, or sports hernia, that he played through during his 2025 season at Utah. Seemingly, the injury didn’t limit Snowden’s production too much, as he made 37 tackles, including two for loss, and broke up 11 passes for the Utes. After having surgery in February, Snowden was out of commission for eight weeks but able to return on a snap count relatively quickly.

Snowden and Steahling’s roles on the Wolverines defense are less cemented than those of Daley and Moore, but their return remains key for Michigan as it plans to employ a complicated defensive scheme that needs depth at every position.

“Nathaniel’s doing a really good job,” Hill said. “You see a player that’s played a lot of college football. He does a good job staying square. Does a good job being physical. Knows his assignments. He’s really picked up the defense fast. So I’m excited about his future and what he’s doing right now.”

While all four of these players have yet to endure the same intensity of game where they suffered their injuries, their returns to the field still show promise for the Wolverines. On a team that has experienced immense turnover, depth at any position will be welcomed and these four players have not just taken their returns in stride, but made statements with them.

Please consider donating to The Michigan Daily

Related articles

Some of the biggest defensive names coming out of fall training camp for the Michigan football team were unavailable a mere six months ago.
