{"id":6218,"date":"2026-08-29T15:49:04","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T15:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/08\/29\/move-in-begins-at-brand-new-wolverine-village-dorms\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T15:49:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T15:49:07","slug":"move-in-begins-at-brand-new-wolverine-village-dorms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/08\/29\/move-in-begins-at-brand-new-wolverine-village-dorms\/","title":{"rendered":"Move-in begins at brand-new Wolverine Village dorms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General move-in at <a href=\"https:\/\/housing.umich.edu\/residence-hall\/wolverine-village-building-1\/\">Wolverine Village<\/a> began Wednesday, with students traveling from across the country with their families to move into the University of Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/umich-leaders-break-ground-on-new-residence-complex\/\">newest<\/a> residence hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/university-of-michigan-649-million-five-building-dorm-complex-wolverine-village\/\">$649 million<\/a> residence hall, which is located on the former Elbel Field site on Hill Street, is split between five buildings with a courtyard in the middle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineering freshman Caroline Ward moved in early Monday. In an interview with The Michigan Daily, Ward said Wolverine Village was her first-choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did the self-selection, so we got to choose here, and I was very happy we got here,\u201d Ward said. \u201cI wanted to be close to (Central Campus), and I wanted to have AC in the new dorms.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wolverine Village stands out from other residence halls for its unique <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/wolverine-village-is-a-new-model-for-living-and-learning-on-campus\/\">sustainability features<\/a>. As the University\u2019s first housing facility to feature geo-exchange heating and cooling, it uses the Earth\u2019s moderate temperature as an energy source to warm and cool buildings. The dorm also has solar panels, covered bicycle parking and a bicycle repair room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jose Pizarro, the father of an LSA freshman, was visiting from Puerto Rico for move-in. In an interview with The Daily in the dorm\u2019s courtyard, he said he feels the dorm was well thought-out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI like that you have this central open space right here \u2014 creates that sense of community,\u201d Pizarro said. \u201cAnd then you have your own private space for activities and all that, and then you have the dining hall right here, so I think it was very well-designed and thought about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The residence hall adds another 2,300 beds to on-campus housing, providing additional space for both first-year and returning students to live on Central Campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wolverine Village is farther away from the Diag than most other residence halls on Central Campus. To assist students with their commutes, the University <a href=\"https:\/\/ltp.umich.edu\/2026\/08\/12\/commuter-route-expansion-coming-this-fall\/#:~:text=Heading%20into%20the%20fall%20semester%2C%20the%20Commuter%20North%20and%20Commuter%20South%20routes%20will%20double%20in%20frequency%2C%20add%20weekend%20service%2C%20and%20have%20some%20bus%20stop%20adjustments%20along%20the%20southern%20edge%20of%20Central%20Campus.\">will<\/a> double the frequency of Commuter North and Commuter South bus routes starting this fall, in addition to new weekend service and bus stops near the complex.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LSA freshman Madeline Quint told The Daily she requested to live in Wolverine Village because it was the newest residence hall. Quint said she remains positive about the distance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHonestly, I was dreading it at first,\u201d Quint said. \u201cBut now, looking on the positive side, I\u2019m going to get my steps in, just get to see more of campus, so honestly I\u2019m really glad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/dining.umich.edu\/menus-locations\/dining-halls\/wolverine-village-dining-hall\/\">Wolverine Village Dining Hall<\/a> has more than 800 seats, and is the first on campus to use all-electric culinary appliances. The dining hall\u2019s second floor has private event rooms and a teaching kitchen, which provides interactive learning experiences about food, culture, and sustainability in a partnership between LSA and <a href=\"https:\/\/dining.umich.edu\/\">Michigan Dining<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LSA freshman Anish Kulkarni told The Daily he was fond of the new dining hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe dining hall is awesome,\u201d Kulkarni said. \u201cI think it\u2019s the best one on campus. It\u2019s better than South Quad for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wolverine Village is home to two living-learning communities: the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/msc\/prospective-students\/residence-hall-locations.html\">Michigan Sustainability Community<\/a> \u2014 which is also housed in Oxford Houses \u2014 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/csp\/bridge-programs\/BridgeScholarsPlus.html\">Bridge Scholars Plus<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, the University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/construction-delays-may-push-some-fall-2026-wolverine-village-residents-into-temporary-dorms\/\">sent<\/a> an <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Ez5KiGQgi039SkIf99v3-kikGLg1CnsC\/view\">email<\/a> notifying Building 4 residents that construction delays might lead them to be temporarily assigned to another residence hall.
