The No. 15 Michigan football team looks a lot <a href=\"http:\/\/google.com\/search?q=michigandaily+michigan+hires+kyle+whittingham&amp;oq=michigandaily+michigan+hires+kyle+whittingham&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIHCAEQIRiPAtIBCDMzNTFqMGo5qAIGsAIB8QVxtQHkGkNnHA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;source=chrome.ob&amp;ie=UTF-8\">different<\/a> this season, and look no further than the man in charge: head coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham brings 21 years of head coaching experience with him from Utah, alongside some star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/michigan-lands-utah-edge-rusher-john-henry-daley-from-transfer-portal\/\">talent<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/michigan-hires-jay-hill-as-new-defensive-coordinator\/\">coaches<\/a> from the Beehive State.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everything with the Wolverines is new, though: sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood will remain at the helm for his second season, almost the entire offensive line is returning and Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/moore-and-bracy-to-orchestrate-secondary\/\">secondary<\/a> will feature some important familiar faces. But with all the offseason\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/sherrone-moore-sentenced-to-18-months-probation-avoids-jail-time\/\">tumult<\/a>, it remains to be seen how Whittingham will steady the ship and merge old and new.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this new look across the program, the Wolverines hope to flex their muscles against reigning MAC champion Western Michigan on Saturday. Will Michigan roll over a less-talented opponent, or will its previous nonconference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/bryce-underwood-in-control-in-debut-versus-new-mexico-leads-michigan-to-34-17-win\/\">struggles<\/a> continue? Here are some important questions to help you parse through the season opener.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What will the offensive line look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n<style><![CDATA[@media ( min-width: 300px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-1{min-height: 250px;}}@media ( min-width: 728px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-1{min-height: 90px;}}]]><\/style>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Whittingham was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/i-hate-depth-charts-whittinghams-results-first-mentality-driving-offensive-line\/\">adamant<\/a> in press conferences that he will not release a depth chart, in part so that the Broncos have to figure out the offensive line during the game, there is a pretty clear picture of what it will look like.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two guaranteed starters will be juniors center Jake Guarnera and right tackle Andrew Sprague. Beyond that, indications point to senior guards Nathan Efobi and Evan Link working in with each other, and junior tackle Blake Frazier filling out the line at left tackle. The offensive line will likely be a season-long competition filled with depth at each position. In essence, Saturday\u2019s starting O-line is licensed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/michigan-still-searching-for-best-combination-on-offensive-line\/\">change<\/a> week-to-week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c(Efobi, Link and senior guard Brady Norton) will all play,\u201d offensive coordinator Jason Beck said Wednesday. \u201cWho starts will be one thing and (offensive line coach Jim Harding) can kind of tell them whenever that is. But all three guys will play and play fairly similar snaps, and because we feel good about all three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the offensive line is composed entirely of returners, Harding is the one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/breaking-down-michigans-new-position-coaches\/\">fresh<\/a> face in the room. Whittingham worked with Harding for over a decade and called him a \u201cproven commodity\u201d to have on staff. Throughout fall camp, the players have remarked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=michigandaily+jim+harding&amp;sca_esv=8b4659d1f6f28da8&amp;sxsrf=APpeQns3FIGb8g0jX59MzSxXuxQkbqeErQ%3A1788463742348&amp;ei=fsqZasvqFOPdruEPwICkkQ4&amp;biw=1470&amp;bih=832&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjLobnQktOWAxXjrisGHUAAKeIQ4dUDegQIBhAM&amp;uact=5&amp;oq=michigandaily+jim+harding&amp;gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiGW1pY2hpZ2FuZGFpbHkgamltIGhhcmRpbmcyBxAhGAoYoAEyBxAhGAoYoAEyBxAhGAoYoAEyBxAhGAoYoAEyBxAhGAoYoAFI_gVQAFgAcAB4AJABAJgBugWgAboFqgEDNS0xuAEDyAEA-AEBmAIBoALABZgDAOIDBRIBMSBAkgcDNS0xoAfMBbIHAzUtMbgHwAXCBwMyLTHIBwOACAE&amp;sclient=gws-wiz-serp#:~:text=Varied%20coaching%20personalities,%E2%80%BA%20Sports%20%E2%80%BA%20Football\">bond<\/a> Harding has created with the position group, and the rigor in which he approaches practice and training.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By and large, the unit should be able to physically dominate the Broncos, who have a much smaller defensive line than the average Big Ten school. A strong offensive line will help Underwood stay composed in the pocket, while helping the Wolverines establish their potent run game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n<style><![CDATA[@media ( min-width: 300px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-2{min-height: 250px;}}@media ( min-width: 728px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-2{min-height: 90px;}}]]><\/style>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How will the linebackers stop the run?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a defensive line that coaches have highlighted as the strongest position group on the team, and a secondary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/versatility-experience-driving-zeke-berry-ahead-of-final-season\/\">ripe<\/a> with NFL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/college\/university-michigan\/2026\/08\/12\/michigans-defensive-backfield-brimming-with-versatility-depth\/91274460007\/\">talent<\/a>, the linebackers are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/surrounded-by-talent-underwood-linebackers-still-have-question-marks\/\">weakest<\/a> projected defensive position group \u2014 almost by default.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while the starting offensive line is still somewhat ambiguous, Michigan defensive coordinator Jay Hill confirmed Wednesday that the three starting linebackers will be sophomore Chase Taylor, graduate Nathaniel Staehling and senior Troy Bowles. The linebackers aren\u2019t lacking in talent, but aside from Staehling, it\u2019s a group that hasn\u2019t played a ton of football.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, Western Michigan is returning 2025 1,000-yard rusher Jalen Buckley, <a href=\"https:\/\/getsomemaction.com\/news\/2026\/8\/17\/football-lowry-named-to-walter-camp-player-of-the-year-award-preseason-watchlist.aspx\">First Team All-MAC<\/a> quarterback Broc Lowry and an experienced offensive line whose depth has been bolstered via the transfer portal. The Broncos ran the ball extremely well last year, and they project to do it again this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The D-line will likely be talented enough to impose its will on the Broncos\u2019 offensive line, but stifling the dynamic duo of Buckley and Lowry will be a heavy load for the linebackers. If the Wolverines can stop the run and get Western Michigan into third-and-long positions, their linebackers will have done their job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n<style><![CDATA[@media ( min-width: 300px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-3{min-height: 250px;}}@media ( min-width: 728px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-3{min-height: 90px;}}]]><\/style>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How much will Jason Beck utilize the running game?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With all the anticipation of Underwood\u2019s improved throwing mechanics and decision-making process, lest we forget that Michigan has one of the best backfields in the conference. After proving himself as a bellcow back, junior running back Jordan Marshall is primed for a big season. Add on five-star freshman Savion Hiter and senior running back Bryson Kuzdzdal \u2014 who showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/sports\/football\/in-yet-another-crowded-running-back-room-bryson-kuzdzal-is-refusing-to-be-forgotten\/\">flashes<\/a> in limited carries last season \u2014 and you get a potent backfield.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last season at Utah, Beck ran the ball <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamrankings.com\/college-football\/stat\/passing-play-pct\">roughly<\/a> 60% of the time. With his comments about modeling this year\u2019s offense after last year\u2019s with the Utes, and the Wolverines\u2019 offensive line\u2019s run-blocking prowess in 2025, it seems like the rushing attack will be the focal point of the offense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is Michigan,\u201d Frazier said Wednesday. \u201cWhen you think Michigan, you think run the ball, and so that\u2019s obviously the number one goal that we\u2019re going to have every week is to be able to impose our will when we want to. Obviously we\u2019ve got three of the best backs in the country to do it, and I could not be more excited to see what they\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, every Michigan fan is clamoring to see Underwood\u2019s development \u2014 a topic discussed ad nauseam in the offseason. But if the ground game is rolling, expect Beck to stick with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-4    \">\n<style><![CDATA[@media ( min-width: 300px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-4{min-height: 250px;}}]]><\/style>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wolverines are coming into the 2026 season with a gauntlet of ranked games on their schedule.
