{"id":6368,"date":"2026-09-08T15:49:04","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T15:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/09\/08\/scott-rudin-plans-broadway-show-with-julia-roberts-and-paul-rudd\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T15:49:05","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T15:49:05","slug":"scott-rudin-plans-broadway-show-with-julia-roberts-and-paul-rudd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2026\/09\/08\/scott-rudin-plans-broadway-show-with-julia-roberts-and-paul-rudd\/","title":{"rendered":"Scott Rudin Plans Broadway Show With Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tProducer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/scott-rudin\/\" id=\"auto-tag_scott-rudin_1\" data-tag=\"scott-rudin\">Scott Rudin<\/a> is back on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/broadway\/\" id=\"auto-tag_broadway_1\" data-tag=\"broadway\">Broadway<\/a> this season with the boldest works of his comeback thus far: a critically acclaimed play about four convicted sex offenders and a starry, but nearly wordless play, <em>Small Mouth Sounds,<\/em> with Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe play, <em>Downstate<\/em>, written by Bruce Norris, premiered in 2018 at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 2022, where it received positive reviews. Joe Mantello, who has led all of Rudin\u2019s Broadway projects after his comeback, will also direct this piece, which runs this fall at the Booth Theatre starting Oct. 17, ahead of a Nov. 15 opening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Small Mouth Sounds<\/em>, written by Bess Wohl, last season\u2019s Pulitzer Prize winner for <em>Liberation<\/em>, will run this spring, starring Roberts and Rudd as well as Martin Freeman, Greta Lee, Sarah Paulson and Isaac Powell. The comedic play, which is set at a silent retreat, has the unique convention of having the majority of its characters barely speak, and rather rely on their physicality. It comes to Broadway after well-reviewed runs Off-Broadway in 2015 and 2016.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMantello also directs this play, which is set to begin performances Feb. 18, 2027 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, ahead of a March 18 opening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Downstate<\/em> has previously attracted some controversy for taking on the topic of pedophilia, as one of the sex offenders, who lives with the others in a group home, is confronted by a former student. Sen. Ted Cruz responded to a positive review of the play in <em>The Washington Post<\/em> by tweeting \u201cSo now the corporate media is praising pedophilia,\u201d alongside other critiques from right-wing commentators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe cast of <em>Downstate <\/em>will feature <em>The Bear<\/em>\u2019s Liza Col\u00f3n-Zayas, K. Todd Freeman and Francis Guinan, both of whom appeared in the play\u2019s original Chicago cast, Cassie Beck, Adrian Martinez, Al\u2019Jaleel McGhee, Thomas Sadoski and Ivy Wolk. Rudin made the rare choice to tease the play, and its director, on signage that appeared above the Booth Theatre last month. He is producing both plays with Barry Diller.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe announcements follow Rudin\u2019s return to Broadway producing last season with<em> Death of A Salesman<\/em>, starring Laurie Metcalf and Nathan Lane, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/arts\/scott-rudin-wins-best-play-tony-awards-bullying-claims-1236616126\/\">which won six<\/a> Tony Awards, including best revival of a play, as well as <em>Little Bear Ridge Road<\/em>, last fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRudin also teased that he will present another work this season starring Metcalf which is yet to be announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRudin had stepped away from producing in 2021, after a <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em> story <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/everyone-just-knows-hes-an-absolute-monster-scott-rudins-ex-staffers-speak-out-on-abusive-behavior-4161883\/\">detailed multiple claims<\/a> from Rudin\u2019s former employees of bullying and verbal abuse as well as throwing objects at staff. This also sparked a protest on Broadway, and Rudin\u2019s resignation from the Broadway League. While there has been some behind-the-scenes tension, there has been little outward pushback to his return to the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThroughout his career, Rudin has been known for bringing newer works from modern playwrights to Broadway, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/scott-rudins-little-bear-ridge-road-to-close-early-on-broadway-1236449141\/\">to varying degrees<\/a> of success,alongside big titles, like <em>Death of a Salesman<\/em> or <em>Hello, Dolly!<\/em> with Bette Midler.
