{"id":727,"date":"2025-04-05T06:38:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-05T06:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/05\/penny-stamps-speaker-series-welcomes-john-cameron-mitchell\/"},"modified":"2025-04-05T06:38:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T06:38:25","slug":"penny-stamps-speaker-series-welcomes-john-cameron-mitchell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/05\/penny-stamps-speaker-series-welcomes-john-cameron-mitchell\/","title":{"rendered":"Penny Stamps Speaker Series welcomes John Cameron Mitchell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>On Thursday, Stamps School of Art and Design welcomed actor, writer and director John Cameron Mitchell to the packed<a href=\"https:\/\/marquee-arts.org\/michigan-theater\/\"> Michigan Theater<\/a> for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/stamps.umich.edu\/events\/john-cameron-mitchell-2\">Is This My Story to Tell?,<\/a>\u201d a lecture on Mitchell\u2019s career and activism. The talk was part of the<a href=\"https:\/\/stamps.umich.edu\/penny-stamps-speaker-series\"> Penny Stamps Speaker Series<\/a>, a weekly art and design lecture intended to expose students to different creative fields and respected speakers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell is known for his role in the musical \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hedwigbroadway.com\/\">Hedwig and the Angry Inch<\/a>,\u201d the story of a genderqueer singer who escapes occupied East Berlin to the United States, which he later<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0248845\/\"> adapted for the screen<\/a>. Mitchell has also directed many other films, such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0935075\/\">Rabbit Hole<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0367027\/\">Shortbus<\/a>.\u201d He is also a podcaster, creating the podcast musical \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt11669298\/\">Anthem: Homunculus<\/a>\u201d as well as a fictional podcast \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/1119-cancellation-island-263074979\/\">Cancelation Island<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While speaking, Mitchell had a picture behind him of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollector.com\/claude-cahun\/\"> Claude Cahun<\/a>, a Queer French artist from the 1920s, citing the impact Claude and her wife, Marcel Moore, had on the art community in Paris.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Claude Cahun, who, with her wife, Marcel \u2014 they took gender non-specific names \u2014 and they kind of busted out of the scene in Paris,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cWhen they came in there in the \u201920s, (it was) a boy\u2019s club.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Mitchell emphasized how dangerous political divisions can be, satirically referencing a statement by Elon Musk on an episode of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sSOxPJD-VNo&amp;t=4560s\">Joe Rogan Experience<\/a>\u201d podcast\u200b.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I was going to take over this country, I would separate people by identity,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cFirst of all, that is easy. That has been done. I would invent the internet, and I would probably employ, as kind of an enforcer, someone who said that empathy is our greatest human weakness, as Elon Musk said.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Mitchell, community involvement is crucial, speaking directly to student attendees about retraining their minds to be more accepting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still have optimism in you \u2014 you have that in you \u2014 it\u2019s not going to go away,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cYou can retrain yourself for a different way of thinking about doing the right thing, which is much less judging, and it\u2019s much more active.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell ends his lecture the same way he began, by singing a song from \u201cHedwig,\u201d starting with \u201cWicked Little Town\u201d and concluding with \u201cOrigin of Love,\u201d alongside guitarist Jonathan Edwards.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In an interview with The Michigan Daily, Art &amp; Design junior Michael Russell reflected on the importance of Mitchell\u2019s lecture, especially in the wake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/umich-announces-cuts-to-all-dei-programs\/\">University\u2019s cuts<\/a> to all diversity, equity and inclusion programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was really impactful,\u201d Russell said. \u201cActually, I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about politics and the state of our country, for obvious reasons. I\u2019ve been having a lot of discussions with classmates, especially with DEI being rolled back recently.
