{"id":739,"date":"2025-04-06T00:39:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-06T00:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/06\/ford-school-hosts-john-hudson-compares-trump-and-biden-terms\/"},"modified":"2025-04-06T00:39:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T00:39:20","slug":"ford-school-hosts-john-hudson-compares-trump-and-biden-terms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/06\/ford-school-hosts-john-hudson-compares-trump-and-biden-terms\/","title":{"rendered":"Ford School hosts John Hudson, compares Trump and Biden terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Ford School of Public Policy\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/diplomacy.umich.edu\/\"> Weiser Diplomacy Center<\/a> hosted Washington Post journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/people\/john-hudson\/\">John Hudson<\/a> on Wednesday afternoon to discuss national security and recent events concerning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/02\/nx-s1-5348083\/legal-scholar-sees-immigrant-arrests-as-a-struggle-for-the-soul-of-the-country\">immigration<\/a>, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/backgrounder\/ukraine-conflict-crossroads-europe-and-russia\"> Russia-Ukraine war<\/a>, the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-expands-military-operation-gaza-defence-minister-says-2025-04-02\/\">Israeli military campaign<\/a> in Gaza and the challenges he faced as a journalist. The<a href=\"https:\/\/fordschool.umich.edu\/event\/2025\/national-security-2020s-looking-back-and-ahead\"> event<\/a>, titled \u201cNational Security in the 2020s: Looking Back and Ahead,\u201d was mediated by Javed Ali, associate professor of practice at the Public Policy School.<\/p>\n<p>Hudson first spoke on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhfs.com\/insights\/alerts-articles\/2025\/a-first-look-at-the-second-trump-administration-s-national-security-and-foreign-policy\"> shifting priorities<\/a> from former President Joe Biden to President Donald Trump\u2019s administrations on the issue of immigration and violence in Latin America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big difference that really sticks out to me is the relationship between Rubio and El Salvador president Bukele,\u201d Hudson said. \u201cRubio is the point man in that relationship \u2026 Bukele has extended his olive branch to the Trump administration, saying \u2018I\u2019ll take anybody.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hudson also discussed the Russia-Ukraine war, saying he felt the handling of the conflict by the Trump and Biden administrations differed greatly.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of the policy areas where you couldn\u2019t imagine a more stark difference,\u201d said Hudson. \u201cIn the Biden administration, their plan was to essentially send as many weapons as possible \u2026 and help Ukraine win on the battlefield. And now turn the page to the Trump administration, and he\u2019s trying to bring the end in a rapid clip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hudson then spoke on how the Trump administration is addressing the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza. He explained both administrations wanted to take credit for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/israel-hamas-gaza-ceasefire-hostages-01-15-24\/index.html\"> cease-fire deal<\/a> negotiated in January, as individuals from both administrations took part in negotiations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Michigan Daily, Hudson said he believed there is a potential crackdown on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2024\/12\/22\/presidents-attacking-the-press-00195726\"> journalistic freedom<\/a> by the new administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublishing classified information, are journalists going to be prosecuted for doing things like that?\u201d Hudson said. \u201cAnytime you have a sort of norm-shifting presidency, those are concerns that end up happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rackham student Sheva Khaminov, who attended the event, told The Daily she admired Hudson for his ability to navigate the changing landscape of national security and journalism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s still waiting out the storm the same way we are and knowing that you know folks on the inside, again, reporters, you know staff are kind of being left out in a sort of bubble in terms of what\u2019s really going on at the federal level,\u201d Khaimov said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Khaimov said her favorite part of the event was Hudson\u2019s discussion of the realities of the field of journalism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was almost refreshing and almost shocking to hear that he said that the things that are romanticized about journalism actually kind of do exist, and that is the reality that he lives in,\u201d Khaimov said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Daily Staff Contributor Micayla Horwitz can be reached at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/government\/weiser-diplomacy-center-hosts-john-hudson-to-discuss-the-differences-between-trump-and-biden-administrations\/mailto:hmicayla@umich.edu\"><em>hmicayla@umich.edu<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Correction 04\/04 :<\/em> <em>John Hudson\u2019s occupation has been updated to reflect he is not an opinion columnist. <\/em><\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p><h3 class=\"jp-relatedposts-headline\"><em>Related articles<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ford School of Public Policy\u2019s Weiser Diplomacy Center hosted Washington Post journalist John Hudson on Wednesday afternoon to discuss national security and recent events concerning immigration, the Russia-Ukraine war, the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza and the challenges he faced as a journalist.
