My name is Evelyn and this is my second (and sadly final) crossword for The Michigan Daily. I’ve so enjoyed being a part of The Daily and spending time with such talented people! Crosswords are something I’ve always used to relax, and I hope this one provides solvers the same comfort. If you’ve got feedback or thoughts on the puzzle, please do not hesitate to reach out at evepet@umich.edu. For anything general, head to crosswords@umich.edu.

Tricky Clues:

6A. “Lots and lots” refers to SCADS. A synonym for loads and heaps, scads is an informal term for a large quantity of something. I hadn’t personally come across this word before the puzzle, but I’m determined to add it to my vocabulary in the future.

35A. “Shoe store chain” refers to DSW. I’m not certain how well-known DSW is, so I can understand if this threw some solvers for a loop. The fact that it’s an acronym for “Designer Shoe Warehouse” might be helpful context.

26D. “Black licorice flavor” refers to ANISE. I made the mistake of trying Good & Plenty’s at a movie recently, and was not impressed. I now understand that they’re essentially just black licorice, and that I should avoid anise flavor altogether.

39D. “Barre exercise before tendu” refers to PLIE. This is a bit of a niche reference, and might have been difficult if you haven’t taken a ballet class before. I took many in high school, so it is unfortunately burned into my memory that plie is the first exercise of barre, and tendu is the second.

Today’s Theme:

One of my best friends has an upcoming birthday. My plan is to bake her a cake, though my indecision is preventing me from even preheating the oven. The theme for this puzzle is revealed with 47A “APIECEOFCAKE.” I decided to share some of the cake options I’m still hemming and hawing over, such as 11-Down as UPSIDEDOWN, 17-Across as BLACKFOREST and 28-Across as MARBLE. If anyone has any recommendations, please help — anyways, I hope everyone enjoys the puzzle!

Answer Key:

The post Preheat to 350° appeared first on The Michigan Daily.

SUNDAY PUZZLE —Hi!
