{"id":824,"date":"2025-04-11T06:51:20","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T06:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/11\/bsu-leads-umich-community-in-protest-against-dei-cuts\/"},"modified":"2025-04-11T06:51:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T06:51:24","slug":"bsu-leads-umich-community-in-protest-against-dei-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/11\/bsu-leads-umich-community-in-protest-against-dei-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"BSU leads UMich community in protest against DEI cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Hundreds of demonstrators chanted \u201cwe are the people, we are the power\u201d on the Diag Thursday evening, as leaders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thebsu.wixsite.com\/thebsu\">Black Student Union<\/a> led a crowd of University of Michigan students and community members in protest against the University\u2019s recent<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/umich-announces-cuts-to-all-dei-programs\/\"> elimination<\/a> of all diversity, equity and inclusion programs.<\/p>\n<p>LSA senior Princess-J\u2019Maria Mboup, BSU speaker, was the first speaker of the rally. She condemned cutting DEI programs as a reversal of decades of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/campus-life\/historical-protest-movements-at-umich-black-action-movement\/\"> progress<\/a> made by<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.umich.edu\/online-exhibits\/exhibits\/show\/history-of-the-william-monroe-\/the-black-action-movements\"> previous<\/a> Black activists hailing as far back as the<a href=\"https:\/\/deepblue.lib.umich.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/2027.42\/111871\/A%20Decade%20of%20Dissent%20Student%20Protests%20at%20the%20University%20of%20M%20-%202006_bhl-158bcafe.pdf?sequence=3&amp;isAllowed=y\"> Civil Rights Movement<\/a> of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a quick regression back into the hostile, overtly white supremacist institution that (the University) was designed to be,\u201d Mboup said. \u201cThis university has undone decades of work centered around principles of diversity, equity and inclusion \u2014 principles that they\u2019ve claimed for almost a decade to hold as core values to the institution. They\u2019ve strategically taken down, all at once, the Office of DEI scholarships, programs and initiatives, including the campus-wide action item within DEI 2.0 that focused on enhancing Black student representation and experiences.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mboup also expressed feeling betrayed by the University\u2019s decision after years of the administration claiming to support the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201c(University) President Santa Ono, Provost Laura McCauley and (Vice President) for Student Life Martino Harmon spent two and a half years telling me, to my face, that they were invested in our work and improving the experience of Black students,\u201d Mboup said. \u201cI\u2019ve personally spent nights and weekends working, skipped classes, failed exams, lost sleep and spent years of my life doing this work, so this cut for me is personal. For generations of student activists, it\u2019s personal. Their decisions have been cowardly and cruel, and to cut\u00a0 the culmination of so much labor is a knife in the backs of all of those who fought the good fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U-M alum Eaman Ali spoke at the event and criticized the University\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/regents.umich.edu\/regents\/\"> Board of Regents<\/a> for their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/administration\/umich-board-of-regents-discusses-divestment-departing-officers\/\"> refusal<\/a> to divest from Israeli companies profiting from Israel\u2019s military<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/how-many-palestinians-has-israels-gaza-offensive-killed-2025-01-15\/\"> campaign<\/a> in Gaza. Ali also discussed inaction from the University regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/u-m-student-visas-terminated-by-federal-government-rises-from-4-to-12\/\">termination<\/a> of student visas and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/research\/nih-pulls-funding-from-umich-transgender-health-research\/\">funding<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/news-briefs\/umich-alumni-association-discontinues-lead-scholars-program\/\">cuts<\/a> as a result of President Donald Trump\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The regents are) sitting back and watching as the federal government revokes the visas of 22 of our peers,\u201d Ali said. \u201cWhat\u2019s more, as students of Color lose scholarships, as research to uplift our communities is cut, as measures to create access to this institution are erased, they are waffling and pretending that it\u2019s simply out of their hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ali\u2019s speech continued, saying he felt the size of the University\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/u-ms-endowment-generated-8-93-return-in-fy-24\/\"> endowment<\/a> would empower the regents to be able to defend their students if they wished to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake, the University of Michigan Board of Regents have a $19 billion endowment at their disposal and they\u2019re choosing to hang us out to dry,\u201d Ali said. \u201cMake no mistake, the regents are not just cowardly in the face of fascism \u2014 they are fascists themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In an interview with The Michigan Daily, LSA junior Keshava Demerath-Shanti said he believes it is important to let the administration know how harmful cuts to DEI programs are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis issue spans beyond just the campus itself,\u201d Demerath-Shanti said. \u201cMy sister works at the hospital and some of the things they\u2019ve cut have been things like translators for patients.
