{"id":836,"date":"2025-04-12T00:52:21","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T00:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/12\/four-umich-and-wayne-state-international-students-sue-trump-administration-for-revoking-student-visas\/"},"modified":"2025-04-12T00:52:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T00:52:25","slug":"four-umich-and-wayne-state-international-students-sue-trump-administration-for-revoking-student-visas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tmbglobal.news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/12\/four-umich-and-wayne-state-international-students-sue-trump-administration-for-revoking-student-visas\/","title":{"rendered":"Four UMich and Wayne State international students sue Trump administration for revoking student visas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclumich.org\/\">ACLU of Michigan<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclumich.org\/en\/press-releases\/aclu-michigan-sues-trump-administration-illegally-stripping-immigration-status\">announced<\/a> Thursday they have filed a federal lawsuit and request for an emergency injunction on behalf of four international students who attend Michigan universities, two of which attend the University of Michigan, after their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/working-in-the-united-states\/students-and-exchange-visitors\/students-and-employment\">F-1 student visa<\/a> statuses were revoked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclumich.org\/sites\/default\/files\/001_complaint.pdf\">plaintiffs include<\/a> a masters student studying mechanical engineering at the University, and a student who has been pursuing a doctorate degree at the School for Environment and Sustainability. The two other students attend Wayne State University.<\/p>\n<p>According to the lawsuit, filed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mied.uscourts.gov\/\">U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan<\/a>, none of the students have been charged or convicted of a crime in the United States, nor have they been active in any on-campus protests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In its press release, the ACLU said President Donald Trump\u2019s administration\u2019s termination of international student visas at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/global\/international-students-us\/2025\/04\/07\/where-students-have-had-their-visas-revoked\">hundreds of universities<\/a> across the country is a violation of the students\u2019 rights to due process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational students form a vital community at our state\u2019s universities, and unilaterally stripping students of their status violates the law,\u201d the press release read. \u201cThe lawsuit details how the termination of F-1 student status violates the students\u2019 due process rights because the government is required to provide advance notice and a meaningful opportunity to respond when taking such action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit specifies that the students\u2019 statuses had been terminated by the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/sevis\">Student and Exchange Visitor Information Program<\/a> without notifying them or their schools about the reasons behind the terminations.<\/p>\n<p>Students learned of their status being terminated after they received an email from their respective universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of being notified by DHS or another government agency, Plaintiffs each received an email from their respective school informing them that the school learned during their periodic check of SEVIS records that the Plaintiff\u2019s student status had been terminated,\u201d the lawsuit read.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p><em>Daily News Editor Christina Zhang can be reached at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/aclu-of-michigan-sues-trump-for-revoking-umich-and-wayne-state-international-student-visas\/mailto:zchristi@umich.edu\"><em>zchristi@umich.edu<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p><h3 class=\"jp-relatedposts-headline\"><em>Related articles<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
