Jared Goff not worried about perfection or last year before trip back to Dallas

ALLEN PARK — Jared Goff went into the bye week after a perfect showing on Monday Night Football, winning NFC offensive player of the week honors in the process.

But the Detroit Lions quarterback isn’t playing into those “Mr. Perfect” vibes or how the team’s last trip to face the Cowboys in Dallas went down controversially. Goff said he’s not sure where the nickname on his Pro Football Reference page came from, saying, “I don’t know where that came from, but it’s not something I’ve proclaimed.”

Heck, Goff said he can still look back at the tape against the Seattle Seahawks and see things he should have done differently. And while there was less to nitpick in that victory, Goff said he’s always looking for things to do differently or better, no matter if a ball hit the turf or not.

“In that game in particular, there’s not going to be very many, maybe a couple that I’d like to have back, but yeah, always,” Goff said. “Always some that you’re looking at, trying to improve on, ‘Why didn’t I see that? Why didn’t I throw it there?’ That game is no different.

“There are other games that I felt like I’ve played even better. We just had no incompletions, which is rare, but there wasn’t like a — I felt good, yeah, I felt good, but I’ve had games where I feel even better, and things are clicking even more. I think we can get there. We can do even better and continue to improve.”

On more serious football business, when asked if this game means more based on how last year’s ended, Goff said it’s more about the fact that the Lions have lost two in a row to these Cowboys with him under center. On top of that, the Lions have lost six straight meetings in the series against Dallas dating back to 2013.

“Yeah, of course, we want to beat them just like we want to beat every other team,” Goff said. “They’re a good team, they’re an NFC opponent, they’re a contending team, and a road win in their place means a whole lot. So yeah, we want to go in there and try to get a win.

” … I don’t want to dwell on something that was eight months ago or whatever. I don’t think we got screwed intentionally. I think it was just a mistake that the officials made, and it happens. That type of stuff happens, and you move on, but no, I don’t think we take it personally. Yeah, of course, I think it’s more on the lines, to answer your question, is we haven’t beaten these guys two years in a row, and that’s more in our heads of like, ‘All right, it’s time to try and stop that.’”

The veteran quarterback said he spent the bye week relaxing on the couch, going on walks with his wife and dog, and watching some football.

Goff, who completed all 18 passing attempts the last time he played, will be facing a Cowboys defense going through a long list of injuries in the trenches. Demarcus Lawrence is on injured reserve, Micah Parsons has a high-ankle injury, and rookie Marshawn Kneeland is reported to have avoided a season-ending knee injury, but his status doesn’t sound great for Week 6.

The Cowboys have been better against the rush recently, but Goff and the Lions should be licking their lips when looking at that pass defense. Dallas ranks 22nd in the league, allowing 6.3 net yards per passing attempt, and slot 31st in red-zone scoring percentage.

“Yeah, they’ve been playing really good football,” Goff said. “They’re a good defense, they’re well-coached, you can tell they’re sound. They do a good job. They have a veteran guy (linebacker) Eric Kendricks in the middle who does a good job of getting everyone lined up and they fly around. They’re a good defense.

“Yeah, it’s mostly upfront with them right now where they’re banged up, so we’ll see who ends up playing and adjust accordingly. But yeah, they’ve got good players waiting in the wings, I’m sure, and we’ll be ready for them.”
