Man stabbed multiple times during child custody exchange, police say

PORTAGE, MI – An argument during a child custody exchange turned violent when a man allegedly stabbed another man multiple times, Portage police said.

The suspect, a 19-year-old Portage man, is lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail with charges pending.

The individual who was stabbed, a 24-year-old Kalamazoo man, was transported to an area hospital and listed in critical condition.

Police initially responded to a 6:25 p.m. report of a stabbing on Monday, July 3, at a McDonald’s parking lot in the 6900 block of South Westnedge Avenue.

Police said the Portage man and Kalamazoo man were involved in a domestic argument during a child custody exchange between the Portage man and his sister’s ex-boyfriend.

The argument erupted into a physical altercation and the Portage man pulled out a knife and stabbed the other man multiple times in the back, police said.

Other people who came with each man then started fighting, which resulted in other injuries.

No other arrests were made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at 269-329-4567 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
