Marco Kasper did all his could do to earn a spot on the Detroit Red Wings’ season-opening roster, but there just wasn’t room, apparently.
Kasper, the eighth overall pick in 2022, was among several players assigned Sunday to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Teams must get down to the 23-man roster limit by 5 p.m. Monday.
Kasper, a two-way center, had an outstanding training camp and preseason and saved his best for last. He scored two goals and had at least two more excellent opportunities to complete the hat trick in Friday’s 4-3 preseason overtime loss to Ottawa.
He will start in Grand Rapids, where he tallied 15 goals and 21 assists in 71 games as an AHL rookie, but likely will get a look in Detroit at some point this season.
The Red Wings also assigned forwards Nate Danielson, their 2023 top pick, Carter Mazur, Elmer Soderblom and Cross Hanas, defensemen William Wallinder, Antti Tuomisto, Eemil Viro and Tory Delo and goaltenders Sebastian Cossa and Carter Gylander to the Griffins.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, the 15th overall pick this year, was reassigned to Skelleftea of the Swedish Hockey League.
NHL veteran Austin Watson, in camp on a tryout, remains on the roster. He is trying to earn a one-way contract and might take Justin Holl’s spot. Holl was waived on Sunday and could be sent to Grand Rapids if he clears as expected.
The Red Wings’ roster is down to 28. It’ll be reduced further on Monday since Shelden Dries, William Lagesson, Brogan Rafferty and Joe Snively were waived.
