The Michigan Daily Sunday Crossword

That’s where I’m gonna wait for you!

SUNDAY PUZZLEHi solvers! It’s kind of a nice coincidence that I find myself both writing crosswords for The Michigan Daily and doing crosswords on the daily. Seriously, if you’re ever bored in lecture or just want a break from studying, doing a crossword allows you to still feel oddly productive and studious without actually getting any work done. I always get the urge to do a crossword whenever I have something due in a few hours, which is probably not great for my GPA but amazing for my puzzle-solving aptitude. It’s also a social thing — just ask my good friend Hania, who set a reminder on her phone for this puzzle coming out; my roommate Eva, who texted me about doing my mini crossword or my parents, who always report back with how long it took them to solve my work. Maybe you’ll make a friend while playing this crossword. If you have any specific comments about this puzzle, you can reach me at macorsi@umich.edu. For general questions and concerns, reach out to crosswords@umich.edu. Happy solving!

Tricky Clues:

50A. The clue “Bachelors may have them” refers to DEGREES. Most of us at Michigan are on our way to a bachelor’s degree, and wow, it is a difficult journey. Best of luck to all of you degree-seekers!

58A. “Meat in an intersection?” is the clue for T-BONE, which happens to be both a cut of steak and a term for a type of two-car accident. I have thankfully never been in an accident, and I also don’t happen to love steak all the time. If you’re inexperienced in these two things like me, this clue might’ve been a little difficult.

68A. “Ideal answer on a Magic 8 Ball” is the clue for YES. I think I had a Magic 8 Ball as a kid, and I remember being infuriated by the noncommittal answers. “Reply hazy, try again” and “Concentrate and ask again” are unacceptable and lazy in my opinion. I would just shake the ball until I got an answer of YES.

9D. “Cause of inflation?” does not relate to the economy or the market. It actually refers to AIR, which supports bike tires, beach balls and the footballs that are thrown by our now 4-2 Michigan Wolverines. Am I bitter? Yes.

45D. The answer to “A plus?” is actually ASSET, not a reference to a grade. I’m sure if you’re a student or just hyper-focused on grades like me, that’s probably where your mind first went to. You are not your grades! I need to be reminded of that more often, too.

Today’s Theme:

Today’s theme actually comes from both a play on words and a very catchy Black Eyed Peas song. 35A, “‘Compromise?’ or what happens in the middle of this puzzle’s starred clues,” refers to MEET ME HALFWAY, something you’d do when you find the middle ground on issues. If you take a look at 19A, 27A, 44A and 53A, you’ll notice that you’ll meet the letters “ME” exactly halfway through FUNDAMENTALS, CARAMELIZE, BAND MEMBER and AWESOME SAUCE. Hopefully you thought this was a creative play on word structure!
