Let’s start with a joke.
“Knock-Knock”
“Who’s There?”
“Interrupting Cow”
“Interrupting Cow wh-”
“MOOOOO”
SUNDAY PUZZLE- I’m sure we’ve all heard that one before (groan). I hope solving today’s crossword at least got a chuckle out of you. I definitely had a good time putting it together. If you have any questions or comments about the puzzle, feel free to email me at nayman@umich.edu. If you have general concerns, you can reach the entire games team at crosswords@umich.edu.
Tricky Clues
20A. Something we have in common with our rivals in East Lansing and Columbus is that we’re all COLLEGESTUDENTS.
65A. The Calla lily is a member of the colorful ARUM family, which can be found all over the world.
26D. RENT-A-Car is somewhere you might go while on a trip to take care of your transportation needs.
37D. A department head is a manager. Shortened to match dept. head in the clue, the solution is MGR.
Today’s Theme
Going back to the joke from earlier, INTERRUPTINGCOW was today’s theme. Each themed entry featured one word spread across two clues, “interrupted” by a cow-derived product.
For example, OPPO-BEEF-SITES was formed by OPPOSITES (1-Across and 9-Across) interrupted by BEEF. That same rule applied to TRADED spread across 25-Across and 31-Across, with Leather in the middle. LAB-CHEDDAR-LED (LABLED, as clued in 45-Across), and STORY-MILK-TIME (STORYTIME, as clued in 66-Across) were the other clued entries.
