Two weeks after the Michigan men’s basketball team secured its first transfer portal commitment of the offseason, coach Dusty May has his second.
It was reported Thursday by On3’s Joe Tipton that LSU forward Jalen Reed has committed to the Wolverines. Reed has spent the last four seasons with the Tigers, but played single-digit games in the last two due to injuries.
A strong athlete at 6-foot-9, Reed brings post scoring and rebounding ability to Michigan. Across the 14 games he’s played in the last two years, he’s averaged 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game on efficient shooting splits. He’s also made 37.9% of his career 3-point attempts, albeit on low volume.
If able to stay healthy, Reed could provide a boost to a Wolverines frontcourt likely to lose several key pieces. Graduate forward Yaxel Lendeborg has already declared for the NBA Draft, while junior center Aday Mara and sophomore forward Morez Johnson Jr. are probable first-round selections with decisions still looming.
If Johnson — the likeliest of the two to return to Ann Arbor — ends up going pro, Reed’s athletic play style from the four sets him up nicely to fill that hole.
