David Lally Jr. signs as undrafted free agent with Baltimore Orioles

Date:

Following the end of the 2026 MLB Draft, senior right-hander David Lally Jr. has signed as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Orioles. He is the third Michigan baseball player to sign with a professional team following the conclusion of the 2026 season, alongside draftees junior second baseman Colby Turner and redshirt sophomore catcher Noah Miller.

Lally began his college career at Notre Dame, but transferred to Ann Arbor going into his junior year. During his tenure with the Wolverines, Lally was a consistent Sunday starter. He had the second-lowest ERA of qualified Michigan pitchers this season at 4.15 through 69.1 innings played. Lally’s magnum opus for the Wolverines came April 19 against Northwestern, where he threw a complete game, only letting up one hit as well.

His starter role carried over from the 2025 season — his first season with Michigan — where he threw two complete games and made it on the Academic All-District list. Lally didn’t rely on his arm strength as much as some other pitchers, instead working to bait a whiff. Consistently tossing cutters and changeups in a four-pitch mix, Lally worked his magic to confuse batters whenever he was pitching.

A steadfast performance on the mound for his entire career with the Wolverines, his absence will be a critical role for Michigan to fill. The only potential returning weekend starter, freshman left-hander Shane Brinham, has transferred to Vanderbilt. While the Wolverines grapple with their starters, Lally will look to carve out a steady role for himself within the Orioles farm system.
