Dylan Murphy joins Michigan as assistant coach

Date:

The Michigan men’s basketball team is set to hire Dylan Murphy as an assistant coach, as first reported by Alejandro Zúñiga of 247 Sports Friday night.

Murphy has been with the Orlando Magic since 2018, serving as the head coach of their G-League affiliate, the Osceola Magic, for the past three years. Before that, he worked with Orlando as a basketball operations analyst and then an assistant coach. After failing to finish top five in the conference in any of the three years before Murphy took over, the Osceola Magic topped the East standings in all three years of his reign.

Much of Murphy’s coaching history has been in the G-League, including previous stops as a G-League scout with the Atlanta Hawks and assistant coach with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. He briefly worked with Ball State as a graduate assistant before joining the Magic, his lone foray into college basketball until now. Murphy graduated from Columbia University in 2012, majoring in classics.

With two departures from a season ago and now the hirings of Mike Martin and Murphy, new Wolverines coach Mike Boynton Jr. should now have a fully rounded-out coaching staff. Murphy’s extensive G-League background makes him a unique final addition to Michigan’s bench.
