SUNDAY PUZZLE — Hello everyone! My name is Kate Paluszewski, and I am so excited to bring you my first Sunday puzzle! This theme was inspired by an exciting — but stressful — time of year: back to school. Summer flew past, and with the first day of school quickly approaching, this puzzle features necessary items for every students’ new year. Tricky Clues
20A: Although it’s not tax season, “Form 1040 calc.” refers to AGI (adjusted gross income), a key baseline used to determine what you owe in taxes.
21A: Those unfamiliar with The Beatles might be unsure who “‘Lovely’ Beatles girl” is referring to, but oldies and Beatles fans alike recognize this with the song “Lovely RITA” from the iconic album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
67A: Romcom fans, like me, know that “Hudson of ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’” refers to the main character, Andie’s actress, KATE Hudson. This was a fun clue for me, as it features my own name along with one of my all time favorite movies!
1D: The clue, “Place of Napoleon’s first exile,” refers to the island of ELBA. After being forced to abdicate his throne, Napoleon was exiled there before his return to France.
35D: “‘At Last!’ singer James” is ETTA. Etta James’ music has always stuck out to me, with some other popular songs of hers’ being “A Sunday Kind of Love” and “Stormy Weather.”
43D: Taking you back to high school science class, LEEWARD refers to facing the direction where the wind is blowing, therefore being “Out of the wind.”
Today’s Theme
My chosen theme was inspired by a new semester emerging and all of the things that come with it. The revealer can be found at 22-Across BACK TO SCHOOL. Each themed entry begins with a back-to-school item. At 16-, 32-, 42- and 63-Across we have BOOKBURNING, PENCILMEIN, DESKCLERKS and BACKPACKING.
