Michigan football defensive coordinator Jay Hill made his defensive philosophy unmistakably clear last week — just win the turnover battle. According to Hill, it doesn’t matter how many turnovers the opposing defense has racked up, as long as your own unit has one more, you’ve done your job.
And as Hill spends the offseason instilling that mantra into his new roster, senior safety Chris Bracy is becoming its embodiment.
“Man, he just always ends up with the ball in his hands,” sophomore wide receiver JJ Buchanan said of Bracy Monday. “He’s got to have four or five interceptions through camp, which is pretty crazy. He’s just a ball hawk.”
And when asked next about the biggest standout in fall camp on either side of the ball, Buchanan answered, without an ounce of hesitation, that it’s been Bracy.
A transfer from Memphis, Bracy is no stranger to a defense that emphasizes winning the turnover battle. It’s something every defense in the nation wishes it could do, but the Tigers actually accomplished in 2025, tying for the second-best turnover margin in the country with a +18 ratio.
Bracy himself contributed an interception — the first of his career — as well as a game-sealing punch-out against Arkansas to that number. But according to him, there is no secret sauce for creating a margin as positive as Memphis’ last year; the only recipe is repetition.
“Practice habits, doing it every day,” Bracy said. “By just coming out in practice, punching out the ball, taking the ball out of the air, and just focusing on it every day, it comes to happen in the game.”
If Bracy believes that good habits in practice translate directly to results on the field, he should be gearing up for another breakout season right now, because Buchanan hasn’t been alone in voicing praise for the safety’s consistent efforts in fall camp. Hill has called him a guy that will be “playing a lot” within his scheme from the get-go this season, and senior linebacker Troy Bowles also called Bracy’s number when asked to name some standouts from camp.
Bowles then cited Bracy’s presence in the box to be the crown jewel of his game thus far, as was the case with the Tigers a year ago. Before forcing that fumble against the Razorbacks in Week 4, Bracy was consistently the third man up in Memphis’ safety room. That turnover put him on the map as a free safety capable of wreaking havoc in the box, something an astonishing end-of-season 91.9 run defense rating by PFF later proved.
But Bracy doesn’t want to exclusively make his impact from the box this year. He shared Monday he’s been splitting duties at both the free and strong safety spots, and that Hill’s defensive scheme tailored around players flying around the field is more suited to his game than staying in one place.
“It fits (my skillset) pretty well,” Bracy said of the defensive scheme. “It definitely shows range of motion as a safety, playing hash-to-hash, sideline-to-sideline, coming down and making hits and different things like that.”
To Bracy, allowing the safeties and everyone else all that range of motion is exactly what leads to the kind of playmaking he’s becoming known for in camp.
“That’s what this defense does,” Bracy said. “It creates turnovers, puts you in position to make plays and puts you in the right spot.”
Less than a year after starting the 2025 season as the third option on a Group of 5 program, Bracy is being hailed by his staff and teammates as a very likely Week 1 starter for a historically strong Power 4 program. The stellar fall camp he’s having is certainly one of the keys to such a jump. He’s creating turnovers that personify his coach’s M.O, he’s shutting down the run and he’s making plays all across the turf. Or, to put it like Bracy, he’s just building habits.
